Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly has approved the Establishment of Private Universities and Regulation Second Amendment Bill-2025, paving the way for greater private sector involvement in higher education. Education Minister Nara Lokesh emphasized the state government’s commitment to encouraging private universities to enhance academic opportunities.

Lokesh highlighted that Centurion University has been brought into Andhra Pradesh despite certain technical challenges. Discussions are also underway for Greenfield University, and VVIT has submitted a request for recognition as a private university under Brownfield provisions, adhering to both state and central regulations.

“VVIT owns 50 acres of land, has a 4,75,278 sq. ft. built-up area, a Centre of Excellence, an incubator, and offers 11 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. With 700 staff members and 9,200 students, the institution is prepared to make substantial investments to transition into VVIT University (VVITU),” Lokesh stated.

As per the 2016 legislation, Greenfield universities refer to new institutions, while Brownfield universities involve conversion of existing institutions. Lokesh explained that legislative amendments are required to officially recognize new universities. With the AP Private Universities and Regularisation Act now passed, the government aims to expand private higher education opportunities, ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks.
