Delhi: Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, made significant remarks during the hearing of a marital dispute case in the Supreme Court, suggesting that the couple should consider mutual consent for divorce. The CJI pointed out that prolonged legal battles often benefit lawyers rather than the parties involved.
The case was brought to the court by a woman seeking the transfer of her dispute case to another court. When asked about her background, the woman revealed she had completed her M.Tech and earned a doctorate from an American university but was currently unemployed.
In response, CJI Chandrachud advised her to prioritize securing a job and consider mutual consent divorce, stating that prolonging the case would only drain time and resources. “You are educated and capable of securing a good job. Why not agree to divorce by mutual consent and close this chapter?” he suggested.
