Hyderabad: A recent study by Hyderabad Central University (HCU) has revealed alarming health concerns among IT employees due to prolonged sitting, excessive work hours, and stress. The research, conducted by Professor Anita along with research students Bhargava and Nandita Pramod under the guidance of Professor Kalyankar Mahadev from HCU’s Department of Medical Sciences, highlights the growing prevalence of obesity and liver diseases in the IT sector.
The study, which involved medical examinations at AIG Hospital in Gachibowli, found that an astonishing 84% of IT employees suffer from Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD). The primary reasons cited include high-calorie diets, excessive consumption of unsweetened soft drinks, and a lack of physical activity.
To gather data, researchers collaborated with hepatologist Dr. Pir Rao at AIG Hospital and conducted medical tests on IT employees between June 2023 and June 2024. A total of 3,450 individuals participated in the study, revealing shocking statistics:
- 84% of IT employees suffer from obesity and fatty liver, with 5% showing severe fat accumulation around the liver.
- 71% of young adults in the sector are obese.
- 34% experience digestive issues, while 10% suffer from diabetes.
HCU researchers have submitted their findings to a scientific research journal, urging IT professionals to adopt healthier lifestyles.
