On the 26th of November, 1949, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, constituted the Indian Constitution, which came into force on the 26th of January 1950.  While the 26th of November is celebrated as the Indian Constitution Day, the 26th of January is celebrated as the Republic Day.

In 2021, the Parliament Speaker Mr. Om Birla and the Parliament of India, organised the event, which is being celebrated in the Central Hall of the Parliament.  The event has been planned as a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government’s ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ programme, to mark the 75 years of India’s Independence.

Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, the Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu, the Parliament Speaker Mr. Om Birla, union ministers and other dignitaries attended the event.  During the grand event, Mr. Modi said, “Constitution Day should have been celebrated each year after 1950 to educate all about what went into the making of the Constitution.  But some people did not do so.  This day should also be celebrated to evaluate whether what we do is right or not.”

The Vice President of India also addressed the Parliament and said, “The Preamble summarises the philosophy of the Constitution in which people preferred our country to be a democratic republic.  It has been our firm belief that people have been at the centre of our development.”

While the BJP leaders and the Union Government officials attended the celebration, oppositions like the Indian National Congress (INC,) the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP,) the Trinamool Congress (TMC,) the Samajwadi Party (SP,) the Shiv Sena, the National Communist Party (NCP) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) boycotted the event.
