United Kingdom: Omicron Cases Triples In UK, Govt Mulls Lockdown To Curb Spread

The United Kingdom (U.K.,) reported a massive surge in the Wuhan virus and the new variant, Omicron.

In the past 24 hours, a total of 90,418 Wuhan virus cases and 10,059 new Omicron cases were reported.  In addition, a total of 125 people died from the Wuhan virus. 

The data of COVID-19 and Omicron cases were confirmed by the U.K., Health Security Agency (UKHSA.)  With the new cases, the United Kingdom reported a total of  24,968 cases.  In addition, the death toll from the Omicron variant jumped from one to seven.  Mr. Sajid Javid, the U.K., Health Secretary said, “We’ve shown in the past as a government in dealing with this pandemic that we will do what is necessary, but it’s got to be backed up by data.”  He further said, “We are watching the data and discussing it with our scientists and our best advisers almost on an hourly basis. We will monitor very carefully, and keep the situation under review.”

Considering the situation, the United Kingdom Government is mulling to impose strict lockdown across the nation.  The London Mayor Sadiq Khan said, “I think if new restrictions are brought in, and by the way, it’s inevitable, there must be a major package of financial support for our hospitality, culture, and retail sectors.”

Meanwhile, in the U.K., currently there are 11,279,428 cases of the Wuhan virus. 

Declared as the ‘Variant of Concern,’ Omicron is increasing rapidly and is currently reported in 89 countries. In addition, as per the World Health Organization (WHO) study, the new variant of COVID-19, is doubling in 1.5 to 3 days, in regions where community spread has been reported.
