ABVP, DU Students Clash, Cops Intervene

A fight broke out on Wednesday in front of the Ramjas College in Delhi after the protest march by AISA and SFI members was disrupted. The protest was against ABVP for disrupting a literary event in the institute. The students were marching to Maurice police station demanding the police to take an action against the ABVP members. The students were protesting ‘breach of freedom of expression.’

This incident is yet to be solved and another incident occurred in the Ramjas College, where in a female student received ‘rape-threats,’ apparently from ABVP members. Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of a Kargil martyr started a campaign on Twitter saying I am not afraid of ABVP. On Monday, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) approached the police requesting protection for the girl.

The 20 year old Delhi University student met the DCW Chief Swati Maliwal with the claim of receiving rape threats from the ABVP members. The college student started the campaign following the unrest at the Ramjas College which went viral and received massive support from across the Nation. Swati Maliwal termed the act ‘shameful’ and wrote to the police commissioner Amulya Patnaik for an FIR to be registered against the ‘abusers.’

“She (Kaur) has been subjected to extreme abuse and rape threats online. Her complaint is self-explanatory and contains relevant screenshots of rape threats and abuse as evidence. Considering the gravity of the situation and the threats received, it is recommended that the girl and her family be provided police protection and an FIR be immediately registered against the abusers,” Maliwal said in the letter. She also added “It is highly unfortunate and shameful that a strong and independent young girl is being threatened and abused for taking a stand against hooligans. It is deeply perturbing that the threats appear to have silent support of some celebrities and leaders as well.”

These incidents were a follow up of the ABVP intervention in the cultural program where in JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid were set to address a seminar on ‘Culture and Protests.’ The DCW issued a notice to the Delhi Police to look into the alleged attacks on women and ABVP’s involvement in it.
