#ArundhatiRoy is trending on Twitter on the 26th of December.  Twitterati took to their handles and posted their opinions regarding Arundhati Roy’s idea of opposing the National Population Register (NPR.)

Arundhati Roy, on the 25th of December, urged the citizens of India to oppose the NPR census by giving the Government wrong information about themselves.

Ms. Roy addressed a public gathering while protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 and said, “They (Government officials) will visit your homes, take your name, phone number and ask for documents like Aadhaar and driving licences.  NPR will become the basis of NRC. We need to fight against it and have a plan.” She also said when the government officials ask citizens their names, they should use names different from their actual ones. She further said if the citizens are asked their address, they should mention it is 7 Race Course Road, which is where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence is situated.

Though Amit Shah, the Home Minister of India, on the 24th of December, clarified NPR is in no way related to the National Register of Citizens (NCR,) citizens are protesting against it.  The Indian National Congress (INC) claimed NPR is the first step towards the NCR’s implementation.

The criticism and protests came after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central Government approved Rs. 8,500 crores for carrying out the NPR process across India.

Under the NPR, a census will be conducted from house to house across the Country to collect every Indian citizen’s biometric and demographic details.  The exercise is expected to begin from the 1st of April, 2020 and continue till the 30th of September, 2020.

Stay tuned for further updates.
