Mr. Uday Umesh Lalit, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) named his successor on the morning of the 11th of October, Tuesday.
According to sources, CJI U.U. Lalit named Justice D.Y. Chandrachud to be his successor. The development came after the Union Law Minister Mr. Kiren Rijiju asked CJI U.U. Lalit to name his successor and submit to the Union Government.
If approved by the Union Government, Mr. D.Y. Chandrachud will be the 50th CJI as Chief Justice of India Mr. U.U. Lalit’s term ends on the 8th of November. Notably, On the 27th of August, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, was sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI.)
Moreover, Justice Lalit had a brief tenure of fewer than three months as the CJI and would retire on the 8th of November, 2022. The retirement age of judges of the Supreme Court is 65 and CJI U.U. Lalit would retire, as he would turn 65 years on the 9th of November, 2022.
Meanwhile, according to sources, if approved, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud would assume charge as the 50th CJI on the 9th of Novembe, and would have a tenure of over two years.
