Asaduddin Owaisi, the Chief of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) slammed the BJP government for taking two different stances at the same time. He mocked the Centre’s contradictory statement about cow slaughter in the Northeast. Speaking to the ANI, Owaisi said, “BJP’s hypocrisy is that in Uttar Pradesh cow is a mummy but in the Northeast it’s yummy.”
The Centre has recently announced that no ban will be imposed on cow slaughter in the three states of Northeast which are set to have elections this year and cow meat is a delicacy in these states. Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland are Christian dominated and beef consumption is a norm in these states.
The BJP government had issued a ban on the illegal slaughter houses in UP and this decision of not banning in the Northeast, despite claims by many BJP leaders that cow is like a mother in Hinduism, invited the ire of many. Visasolie Lhoungu, the Chief of BJP in Nagaland had said that “Ban on cow slaughter like the one in UP won’t take effect in Nagaland if our party comes to power next year. The reality here is very different and our central leaders are aware of that.”
After BJP issued a ban on the killing of cows in the nation because of mother sentiment, many states issued a ban on the illegal slaughterhouses. While in Gujarat punishment with life imprisonment for cow killing, Rajasthan holds the record for having a Cow Welfare Ministry. These decisions did not go well with the Dalits and Muslim minority communities as they form the majority of the butcher community and also consume beef.
