16 December 2013, the day that shook the nation with the brutal assault of a woman on the NCR Delhi roads. The girl renamed as Nirbhaya, meaning Fearless, inspired a law, that punishes offenders with the death penalty. But four years after this incident, the roads of Delhi are still unsafe for women.
On December 15, 2016, Thursday evening a 20 year old woman was assaulted by a driver in a moving car in the National Capital. The woman, based in Noida was in the city to attend an interview, and while waiting for the bus near AIIMS, the accused offered to drop her. When she accepted, he took her to an isolated area in Moti Bagh and assaulted her. The woman managed to escape from the site and approached the police.

 

The DCP of South Delhi briefed the media about the incident on Friday. He said, “The victim took the police team to the location where it happened but we couldn’t find anything there. Later, the victim was taken for a medical examination. We started a probe to nab the accused. We were able to find the car in which the incident happened. We contacted the owner of the car who told us about the driver and the accused in the case. We were able to nab the accused from his friend’s residence.”

The accused was arrested on Thursday night. The car had a Home Ministry sticker on the car, but the police declared that he is not a government employee.

Everyday women face assault irrespective of place, work or position. Safety was and is always a concern to the Indian woman. It has become a routine to hear and read news of assault in our society. There have been a few changes after the Nirbhaya law was passed. More people readily report incidents of assault, people talk about assault as a crime and much more.

But the facts state that crimes against women have not stopped. A total 34,600 assault cases were reported in our country in 2015. In this 2,200 assault reports were filed in Delhi. The assault complaints have almost doubled over the last four years in New Delhi, dubbing the NCR as Assault Capital of India.
