On the 16th of February, Thursday, an Indian Air Force (IAF) flight, C-17 transport aircraft left India to bring 12 cheetahs from South Africa.
The National Tiger Conservation Authority of India confirmed the same and said 12 cheetahs from South Africa would arrive in Madhya Pradesh, India, on the 18th of February. Mr. Bhupendra Yadav, the Environment Minister of India said, for the arrival of cheetahs, the Environment Ministry organised as many as 10 quarantine enclosures at Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP.)
According to sources, these 12 cheetahs, including five females and seven males would first arrive at the Gwalior Air Force Base in Madhya Pradesh. From the Gwalior base, these cheetahs would be taken to KNP in Sheopur district, which is 165 Kms. The transportation of the cheetahs from South Africa was under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and South Africa. The agreement was signed in January, confirming the arrival of the cheetahs to India.
It is to be noted, the cheetahs were scheduled to come to India a few months back, but due to unknown reasons, it got delayed. The 12 cheetahs would be an addition to the 8 cheetahs brought from Namibia last year.
Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, said, “12 cheetahs will be flown in from South Africa on February 18. The present cheetahs are in a healthy condition and we are taking good care of them.”
