Many states and cities of India witnessed extreme heatwaves amid the rising temperature this summers.
The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s base station had recorded a maximum temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius on the 26th of April, Tuesday and is expected to cross 45 degrees Celsius in the coming days. In regard to this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD,) on the 27th of April, issued a “yellow alert” in Delhi, the national capital. The IMD said, considering the situation and heat, the maximum temperature may even leap to 46 degrees Celsius in parts of Delhi.
Notably, the capital had recorded a maximum temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius on the 21st of April 2017, all time high temperature. After years, once again the situation is similar with an extreme rise in temperature. Furthermore, Northwest India has been recording higher than normal temperatures since March last week, with weather experts attributing it to absence of active Western Disturbances over north India and any major system over south India. A yellow alert warning of a heatwave spell in the national capital starting April 28 has been issued.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) uses four colour codes for weather warnings — green (no action needed), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action.)
In addition, people of India in major regions were asked to take precautions and be cautious, avoiding venturing out in noon, amid scorching sun.
