The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO,) on the 26th of August, released second set of images of the Moon’s surface sent by Chandrayaan 2.

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV MK III,) named Chandrayaan 2, captured a few more images of the surface of the Moon and sent it to ISRO, on the 23rd of August.

The images include craters Somerfeld, Kirkwood, Jackson, Mach, Korolev, Mitra, Plaskett, Rozhdestvenskiy and Hermite.  The names of the craters were kept after the names of famous scientists, Physicists and astronomers.

The Chandrayaan 2 satellite entered the lunar orbit on the 20th of August.  Later, on the 21st of August, the satellite captured the first photo of the Moon.

The ISRO took to Twitter on the 26th of August and shared the second set of images taken by the Chandrayaan 2.  The Twitter post read, ” “Lunar surface imaged by Terrain Mapping Camera-2(TMC-2) of #Chandrayaan2 on August 23 at an altitude of about 4375 km showing craters such as Jackson, Mach, Korolev and Mitra (In the name of Prof. Sisir Kumar Mitra).”

Vikram Lander, which was carried by Chandrayaan 2 is all set to land on the surface of the Moon on the 7th of September.

Chandrayaan 2 is a three module spacecraft with orbiter, lander and rover.  Before lander’s soft landing on the Moon’s surface, there will be three more orbit manoeuvres, following which the lander will depart from the Orbiter on the 2nd of September.

After the lander’s separation, it will fly over the Moon for 14 days and will provide data after reading the Moon’s surface.

If the mission is successful, India will become the fourth country to land on the Moon, after Russia, China and the United States of America (U.S.A.)

Stay tuned for further updates.
