Mamata Banerjee’s Injury Ahead WB Elections Creates Political Drama, TMC-BJP Play Blame Game

In the poll bound West Bengal, a recent injury to Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of WB, created a ruckus and blame game.

On the 10th of March, a few unidentified men attacked Ms. Banerjee in Nandigram, West Bengal.

The incident occurred around 6:15 P.M., hours after Ms. Banerjee filed her nomination papers for the Assembly elections. This year, Ms. Banerjee is contesting from the Nandigram constituency, rather than the Bhawanipore constituency.

As of now, Ms. Banerjee is in a hospital and said to have suffered serious bone injuries. According to the doctors treating Mamata Banerjee, she suffered injuries in her left ankle and foot, besides injuries in right shoulder, forearm and neck.

With just a few weeks to the State Assembly elections, the incident created heat amongst supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Mamata Banerjee. The supporters blocked roads, burnt tyres and performed prayers in temples and mosques for her recovery. During the visit of the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar, supporters and TMC members slammed him and shouted slogans to “Go Back.

Meanwhile, the TMC traded charges of the attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.) On the other hand, the BJP blamed Mamata Banerjee and TMC saying the incident was planned to gain sympathy votes.

It is to be noted, according to a preliminary investigation by the police and a section of the eyewitnesses suspect the injuries to be the result of an accident.

The BJP is the strongest opposition and tough competition to Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls.

In the wake of the incident, several districts reported clashes between the BJP and the TMC workers.

To calm her supporters down, Ms. Banerjee posted a video message from the hospital. In the video she said, “I appeal to my party cadres, supporters, activists and common people to maintain peace and calm. It is true that I was badly hurt last night and felt severe pain in the chest and head… I hope to be back on the field in the next few days.”

Ms. Banerjee, who is eying to be a third time Chief Minister, said she would not cancel any scheduled meetings and use a wheelchair if needed.

The West Bengal Assembly elections would be held in 8 phases. The elections are scheduled to begin from the 27th of March and would continue till the 29th of April.
