Paris : Manu Bhaker has made history as the shooter who secured India’s first medal at the Paris Olympics, clinching bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event. The 22-year-old’s remarkable performance has captured the hearts of sports enthusiasts across the nation.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya extended his congratulations to Bhaker, highlighting her dedication and the rigorous training behind her success. “Manu Bhaker has made the country proud by winning the first medal for India in Paris,” Mandaviya said. He attributed her achievement to the ‘Khelo India’ program initiated by Prime Minister Modi, which aims to enhance sports infrastructure and provide recognition at the school and college levels. The program also includes the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which supports athletes financially and through training.

The government invested nearly Rs. 2 crore in Bhaker’s training, including sending her to Germany and Switzerland and providing funds for her coaching needs. This marks the first medal for an Indian shooter since Vijay Kumar’s silver and Gagan Narang’s bronze at the 2012 London Olympics. Bhaker’s final score of 221.7 secured her the bronze after a tough competition.
