Prime Minister Narendra Modi said mobile phones have moved far beyond communication and have become an important tool for good governance.
Speaking at the 10th India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 in New Delhi on Thursday, Modi said mobile phones now help people access government services, education, payments and healthcare.
He said the Digital India programme placed the mobile phone at the centre of efforts to make technology more accessible and reduce the digital divide.
Modi highlighted the DIKSHA education platform, saying it has recorded around 500 crore learning sessions and 600 crore learning minutes. He added that the government aims to connect 25 crore students through the platform.
He also spoke about the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Modi said around ₹50 lakh crore has been transferred directly into beneficiaries’ accounts through DBT.
He further claimed that nearly ₹5 lakh crore was prevented from going into the “wrong hands”.
Modi said these changes show how digital technology is making public services easier to access for people across India.
