In view of the major ‘security lapse’, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, cancelled his Ferozepur visit.

According to sources, Mr. Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Ferozepur, Punjab, on the 5th of January, Wednesday. He landed at Bhatinda helipad on a special helicopter and was scheduled to reach Ferozepur’s Hussainiwala. However, due to cloudy weather, he decided to reach there via road.  On the way he was stuck for 15 to 20 minutes at a flyover, which was 30 km from Hussainiwala memorial. Reportedly, a group from Bharatiya Kisan Union blocked the road, preventing PM Modi’s car from moving further.

Considering the situation, the Ministry of Home Affairs of India, issued a statement regarding the cancellation of the visit. In the statement, the Union MHA said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed event at Ferozepur in Punjab on Wednesday had to be cancelled owing to a “security lapse.”

In addition, the Union Ministry also sought a detailed report from the Punjab Government and to fix responsibility for the lapse and take strict action.

The MHA said, “Due to rain and poor visibility, PM waited for about 20 minutes for the weather to clear out. When the weather didn’t improve, it was decided that he would visit the National Martyrs Memorial via road, which would take more than two hours. He then proceeded to travel by road after confirmation of necessary security arrangements by the Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Police.” The Statement further read, “Around 30 km away from National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala, when the PM’s convoy reached a flyover, it was found that the road was blocked by some protesters. The PM was stuck on the flyover for 15-20 minutes. This was a major lapse in the security of the PM.”

The MHA also said, “As per procedure, they have to make necessary arrangements for logistics, security as well as keep a contingency plan ready. Also in view of the contingency plan, Punjab Government has to deploy additional security to secure any movement by road, which were clearly not deployed. After this security lapse, it was decided to head back to Bathinda airport.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address a rally in Ferozepur and launch development projects worth Rs. 42,750 crores, ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections.
