Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Handloom Day in Chennai on Friday. He arrived in Chennai today and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalaithaa welcomed him with a bouquet. He was also received by Governor K Rosaiah and other ministers at the airport. This is Modi’s first visit to Chennai, since he assumed the office.
On the occasion, Modi will also present National Awards and Sant Kabir awards for handloom weavers for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Prime Minister is likely to meet Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence.
Heavy security has been deployed at the venue, Centenary Auditorium of Madras University. According to reports, the top officials of the police department are overseeing the arrangements.
