Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has been praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu and other leaders after a reported attempt to disrupt a Flydubai flight.
The Flydubai FZ1073 flight was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers, including 27 children. The aircraft sent emergency signals before diverting to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
According to reports, Machchhar was seriously injured during an alleged attack by the co-pilot. Despite his injuries, he helped protect the passengers and the flight crew.
President Murmu praised Machchhar’s courage and quick response. She said his actions helped prevent a major tragedy and wished him a speedy recovery.
PM Modi also called Machchhar a “hero” and said his bravery helped save hundreds of lives. He later spoke to Machchhar’s wife and parents.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also praised the pilot’s courage and presence of mind.
The aircraft landed safely in Tabuk, and the passengers were reported to be out of danger.
