Mr. Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC) joined the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation for the third consecutive day, on the 15th of June.

According to sources, Mr. Rahul Gandhi was summoned in the 2015 National Herald money laundering case.  The ED alleged Ms. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC,) Ms. Sonia Gandhi, the President of the INC, and senior INC leader Mr. Malliakarjun Kharge in the matter.

While, Ms. Sonia Gandhi’s appearance before the ED has been delayed till the 23rd of June, due to her health conditions, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, who was summoned on the 13th of June, has been called for the third day on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, calling the ED investigation bogus and misuse of the power against the opposition, the INC workers and leaders are protesting against the ED questioning of Mr. Rahul Gandhi.  Leading the protest, the INC leader Mr. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, “Detained by police outside AICC office Are we terrorists?  Why are you scared of us?  They are using police force against Congress leaders and workers.”

Another INC leader Mr. Deepender S. Hooda said, “It’s unfortunate that we are being stopped from going to go to our party headquarters.  My official residential premises have been sealed by placing barricades.  This indicates political revenge.”

Notably, the ED registered a case against the Gandhis, alleging a money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper.  In 2012, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) advocate Subramanian Swamy filed a case, claiming that Young Indian Limited (YIL) took over the assets of the defunct print media outlet Associated Journals Limited (AJL) in a “malicious” manner to gain profit and assets worth over Rs. 2,000 crore.  As per the registered case, the YIL took a loan of Rs. 50 lakh from the AJL for starting a newspaper, which was illegal, and then took over the press outlet, National Herald, English Newspaper of AJL.

However, recently the ED reopened the case and questioned INC leader Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge.  The ED summoned Mr. Rahul Gandhi and Ms. Sonia Gandhi on the 8th of June.
