Supreme Court Threatened to cancel Aircel’s 2G spectrum.

On Friday, the Supreme Court of India issued a warning to Aircel about canceling their 2G spectrum if owner and controller of Maxis Group, Ananda Krishnan continues to be absent when summoned by the Indian courts. Aircel, in which Maxis owns 76% of shares was first granted the 2G spectrum licenses in November 2006.

In a notice, the court said, “If he is going to use an asset belonging to this country, he may be anywhere in the world but must appear before us.” After repeated absences in the court, a bench made of Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar and justice N.V. Ramana and D.Y. Chandrachud put forward a proposal of banning the access of Aircel to the 2G spectrum and earning any revenue if this continued.

A special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Delhi issued open bailable warrants to Krishnan in September 2016. Krishnan, the prime accused of Aircel-Maxis money laundering case is a Malaysian citizen. The Interpol on Friday has summoned Krishnan again.

The case was filed by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) which is a non-profit organization. They requested the court to stop Aircel from selling the spectrum. This was because of the two deals Aircel made with Airtel and Reliance in 2016 about sharing the spectrum.
