Tensions escalate at Delhi University

The Delhi University Academic Council meeting that was held on Tuesday was held with the goal of reducing the confusion about the teacher’s recruitment process. But this meeting instead made matters worse in between the administration and Delhi University Teachers Association called DUTA. The teachers’ association rejected the amendment and protested that if implemented it would mean thousands of teachers will have to be removed even though they have several years of experience in the University. Despite the protests, the University claimed that the controversial amendment has already been adopted.

The university issued a media statement after the meeting, it said that the amendment has been adopted in the academic council meeting “in principle.” Also, a committee on appointments and promotions will be set up to look into how the appointments will take place.”

DUTA protested that the University’s declaration was nothing but a ‘Gross misinterpretation of facts’, and has now demanded that the University issue a clarification and announce the names of the teachers who will be included in the three member committee on appointments and promotions. They also demanded that all the teachers who are working on temporary and emergency basis should be recruited into the positions they are filling in, depending on their experience. In the 10,000 teachers that are in the university, close to 4,000 are working ad-hoc. If the teachers and administration do not reach an agreement soon, it is believed that things could become worse at DU.
