USA: U.S. President Donald Trump, known for his strong stance on reducing government spending, recently announced bold measures to streamline federal operations. Speaking at an event in Las Vegas, he proposed repurposing 90,000 Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents by either firing them or assigning them to border security duties. Trump suggested, “We should arm them and send them to the borders,” highlighting his focus on strengthening border enforcement.
Trump’s commitment to cutting federal expenditure was evident from his first term when he issued a 90-day freeze on hiring federal employees, exempting only national security and public defense departments. The IRS faced restrictions, halting new hires until further instructions from the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency.
In addition to reworking the IRS, Trump announced plans for a new External Revenue Office to manage tariffs and income from foreign sources. The office will oversee tariffs on Canada and Mexico, reflecting his administration’s tough trade policies.
Trump has also targeted Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in federal agencies. Through an executive order, he directed the deactivation of DEI initiatives, mandating all related staff be placed on paid leave by Wednesday evening. Agencies have also been instructed to remove DEI-related web pages and halt training programs immediately.
These sweeping measures highlight Trump’s ongoing efforts to reshape federal governance and reduce costs, aligning with his broader policy goals.
