The Union Budget – 2017, left very little room for criticism or complaining to the opposition or the members of different classes in the country. Despite this, the budget received a backlash and negative reactions from some major leaders of the Country. One of the critics is Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee. She criticized the budget using harsh words and called it “useless, baseless, missions, actionless and heartless”.

In a string of tweets, the leader criticized the budget and said the budget be deferred due to the death of Kerala leader E. Ahamed. She also tweeted that the budget failed to pave a road for the future. The CM also asked the government to show the ‘figures of Demonetisation’ and remove all restrictions on cash withdrawal for the taxpayers.

Another politician who spoke about the budget is Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal. Speaking to IANS he said, “It’s a hopeless budget. It has nothing for farmers. It does not talk about jobs for the unemployed.” The Budget stated that maximum cash donations by an individual to any political party should be Rs. 2000 which previously was Rs. 20,000. He also said that curbing political party funding will not eliminate corruption. He said that “It’s a totally negative and hopeless budget.”

Another leader who slammed the budget is Neeraj Shekhar of the Samajwadi Party. He slammed the BJP government in regard to the hike in the petroleum prices. He said that “When the petroleum was at $110 per barrel the price was Rs. 71 and now when the barrel is $58 per barrel it is higher than that.” He questioned the government who should be helping the farmers and the common citizens. He asked why the budget always require for the citizens to sacrifice their hard earned money when the international prices have decreased.

The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was not far behind in expressing his disappointment. He tweeted that, ‘The budget did not in anyway address the problems faced by citizens of the country after Demonetisation.” He also said that any problems with cleaning the political funding will be supported by the Congress Party
