On the 22nd of April, polling for the 6th phase of the State Assembly elections 2021 is underway.  The voting for the last third phase elections began at 7:00 A.M., and would continue till 6:30 P.M.  In the 6th phase 43 Assembly seats of four districts are conducting elections.   

In this phase, close to 306 candidates of several parties are in the fray.  To ensure smooth voting and avoid violence, the Election Commission of State has deployed 1,071 companies of  Central armed security forces and close to 15,790 State police officials were deployed for 43 seats.  In total 14,480 polling stations have been set up in the poll bound districts. 

Over 1.3 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the fifth phases of elections.  

Of them, 53.21 lakh are men and 50.65 lakh women, while 256 are third gender. 

With this, the State would complete polling for 178 seats of the total 294 Assembly seats in the State. 

Updates about the ongoing elections in 43 Assembly constituencies of West Bengal 6th phase elections:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the voters in the fifth phase of the West Bengal election to cast their votes in record numbers on Thursday. He said,  “The people of West Bengal are voting to elect a new assembly. On the sixth phase today, urging those whose seats are polling to exercise their franchise,”

The TMC alleged that CAPF personnel shot a TMC worker in the leg in Kabirul of Ashoknagar constituency under North 24 Parganas district. 

The incident took place at booth number 79 of Dighra Malikberia area in Ashoknagar.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister said, “Didi is very sad as to why Bengal is voting peacefully, hence she is abusing CAPF.  She is the one who used to call CAPF in 2011.”

In another incident, some TMC and BJP workers clashed in Barrackpore area, which is one of the sensitive constituencies in today’s polls. 

A BJP candidate at Labhpur was attacked during a poll campaign on the 22nd of April. Biswajit Mondal, the candidate of the BJP, claimed his car was ransacked. 

In many districts, people standing in long queues are seen outside most of the polling stations.

Till 3:00 P.M., around 57.31 % voting has been recorded in the State. 

The Election Commission has turned down the requests of Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien and Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to club the remaining phases of polls.

Prominent candidate of political parties in the sixth phase election include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP’s) national Vice President Mukul Roy,  the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Ministers Jyotipriyo Mallick, Chandrima Bhattacharya, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M) leader Tanmay Bhattacharya, the TMC candidate and film director Raj Chakraborty and actor-turned politician Koushani Mukherjee.

Meanwhile, amid the rising number of cases, political parties are conducting campaigns and addressing public rallies.   In the past 24 hours, 10,748 new cases were registered in West Bengal.
