In the recent match between India and Australia, the two cricket giants, Steve Smith decided to seek dressing room assistance over the Decision Review System caused a rift. Australians lost the Bengaluru Test match which is back to create rift again.

Steve Smith was out for leg before wicket by the score of 28 in the second innings. Umesh Yadav, the bowler, stayed low and struck him above his left boot in front of the middle stump in their 75-run defeat that brought the series at 1-1. Smith and Peter Handscomb were caught looking at the teams dressing room, where reviews were telecast on the TV so as to go for a review of the verdict. Nigel Llong, the umpire observed this and intervened as the players were not allowed to have outside input to challenge an umpire’s decision.

Nigel Llong, the umpire observed the act and before Kohli could call out, sent Smith off the field.

Virat Kohli almost called out Smith in the act of cheating while Australia’s former captain Michael Clarke voiced his concern over the incident. The Australian team termed these allegations against Smith as outrageous and the BCCI released a press not supporting the Indian Captain and the team. BCCI also stressed the ICC to make note of the fact that Smith admitted to ‘brain fade’ moment at a press conference after the match.

The release read, “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after due deliberation and seeing the video replays of the episode steadfastly stands with the Indian Cricket Team and its Captain Mr. Virat Kohli.” It also added “Mr. Virat Kohli is a mature and seasoned cricketer and his conduct on the field has been exemplary. Mr. Kohli’s action was supported by ICC Elite Panel Umpire Mr. Nigel Llong who rushed in to dissuade Mr. Steve Smith from taking recourse to inappropriate assistance. BCCI has requested the ICC to take cognizance of the fact that the Australian skipper Mr. Steve Smith in his press conference admitted to a ‘brain fade’ at that moment. BCCI sincerely hopes that the rest of the matches are played in the true spirit of cricket.”

This statement by BCCI making Virat Kohli a shield in the Decision Review System has sparked a rift in between the two cricket giants on the media platform with accusations being exchanged openly.
