M.S. Dhoni has stepped down as captain of India’s teams ahead of the ODIs and T20Is. Mahendra Singh Dhoni made his One Day International (ODI) debut in December 2004 against Bangladesh, and played his first Test a year later against Sri Lanka.

After Ricky Ponting and Stephen Fleming, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has played the third highest number of ODIs, as skipper of the Indian cricket team.

Here is the Official  announcement from ICC Board Saying “@msdhoni has stood down as India ODI and T20I caption. He Captained India in 199 ODI’s and 72 T20Is.”


Dhoni will be looking after the selection process for the One Day and T20I series against England, which is going to starts in Pune on January 15th .


Sachin Tendulkar also took the opportunity to congratulate Dhoni on his achievements as skipper and also expressed his wish to see him keep winning games for the Country.

Dhoni is only the most successful Indian Captain, leading the team to victory in the 2007 World T20 in South Africa, the 2011 World Cup in India and the 2013 Champions Trophy in England. Dhoni has captained India in 199 ODIs, Out of which he won 110 and lost 74. He was captain in 72 T20Is, of which India won 41 and lost 28. He was also most successful Test captain, with 27 wins, 18 defeats and 15 draws. M.S. Dhoni was also the only Captain to lead India to ODI and T20I series wins in Australia, and an ODI series win in New Zealand.


He made 9110 ODI runs as Captain at an average of 50.89 with strike rate of 88.80. As a captain in T20Is, Dhoni scored 1112 runs at a strike rate of 122.60. In Test cricket, he made 4876 runs at an average of 38.09 with strike rate of 59.11 .
