Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all formats following a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati on Monday.
The meeting was attended by Harmanpreet, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia led the meeting. Discussions focused on Harmanpreet’s future as captain and Muzumdar’s position as coach.
Calls for Harmanpreet’s removal grew after India failed to reach the knockout stage of the Women’s T20 World Cup in England earlier this year.
India later bounced back strongly. The team won the Women’s Asia Cup in the UAE and then claimed gold at the Asian Games in Japan.
Former India captain Diana Edulji welcomed Harmanpreet’s decision. She said the move would give the new captain and team enough time to build a strong partnership.
Harmanpreet is expected to continue playing, with Edulji noting that she still has several years left in her career.
