Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) raised his voice against the demolition of mosques in India’s various states and cities.

On the 22nd of May, Sunday, Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi said, “You can’t change the character & nature of property determined in the 1991 Act, that’s what Justice Chandrachud and others wrote in their judgment. The 1991 Act says that on August 15, 1991, the existing religious places – be it mosques, temples, churches, will remain…They will not be changed. Period.”

Emphasizing the need for the Places of Worship Act 1991, Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi said, the Act was in place to avoid such controversies, which are resulting in communal disturbance and violence in places in India.

Under the Places of Worship 1991 Act, the religious character of a place of worship existing on August 15, 1947, shall continue to be the same as it existed.

The AIMIM Chief further criticized the judgment of the lower court in the Gyanvapi Row and said, “There can’t be more unfair and biased judgment than this. It goes against the principles of natural justice.”  He also took a dig at the Supreme Court, which instead of taking action against the violation of Act 1991, referred the matter to before the civil judge, senior division, to the court of the Varanasi district judge.

Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi also feared that if the judiciary would not be strict with the Places of Worship Act 1991 implementation and violation, there would be another Babri Masjid issue.

Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi said, “We are very apprehensive that another Babri Masjid will happen. Look at the chronology of the Babri Masjid issue. It started with chabutra the idols were surreptitiously placed inside the mosque, then there was the unlocking of gates, demolition of Babri Masjid, a makeshift temple was erected, permission was given to pray in the makeshift temple and ultimately the Muslim side lost the title suit in the Supreme Court. Not a single person was convicted in the criminal case (relating to the demolition of Babri Masjid.)”

Notably, the statement of Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi came after the ongoing Gyanvapi Masjid row.  A bunch of petitions have been filed in the Allahabad Court, Varanasi District Court, and the  Apex Court, claiming a part of the masjid to be a century old (16th Century old) Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

Hearing the petition, the lower court in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, ordered a probe and survey of the land of Gyanvapi masjid, which many political leaders are opposed.
