The All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in alliance with the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) would contest Gujarat local body elections.
Imtiaz Jaleel, the Member of Parliament (MP) Aurangabad representing the AIMIM, on the 28th of December, confirmed the news of contesting Gujarat local polls.
Mr. Jaleel said, “We plan to contest the local bodies’ elections in Gujarat in alliance with the BTP. We do not have a state unit as yet in Gujarat but there are AIMIM supporters working in places like Ahmedabad and Bharuch.
With this, the AIMIM is planning to make an entry into Gujarat’s politics.
The decision to contest the Gujarat local polls came after gaining success with five seats in the Bihar Assembly elections.
Imitiaz Jaleel said, “I am going to Gujarat in the first week of next month for talks with (the) BTP, after which I will submit a report to my party president.”
The final decision over the alliance would be taken by the President of the AIMIM, Asaduddin Owaisi.
The BTP has two Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the 182 member Gujarat Assembly.
If the alliance is a success, this would be a beginning in Gujarat politics.
Besides Bihar and Gujarat, the Asadauddin Owaisi led AIMIM would also contest the upcoming Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal Assembly elections.
