BRS Seeks Assurance on Free Farm Power

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has demanded the withdrawal of GO 17, which sets up a new power distribution company called Rythu Discom in Telangana. The party wants a written assurance that farmers will continue to receive 24-hour free electricity without cuts.

BRS legislature party deputy leader Harish Rao questioned the Congress government’s decision to proceed with the plan despite concerns raised by farmers, employee unions and power experts.

According to the government order, around 30.6 lakh agricultural power connections will be transferred to the new company, along with other services. Harish Rao questioned whether a staff of just 2,000 employees could manage such a large network.

He also raised concerns about power supply, transformer repairs, maintenance staff and the transfer of loans and pending bills to the new company. He warned that financial problems could later affect free power for farmers.

The BRS has asked the government to explain how the new company will ensure reliable electricity and manage its costs. Harish Rao said the government should withdraw the order if it cannot address these concerns and provide clear assurances to farmers.
