The Indian National Congress (INC) asked the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to clear its stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA,] 2019.

The INC set a deadline of 24 hours for K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, to make a decision about the implementation of the CAA in Telangana.

Shaik Abdullah Sohail, the Chairman of the Minorities Department of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC,) on the 22nd of December, said, “Chief Ministers of many states, including Bihar, have openly announced their opposition to CAA and NRC and made it clear that they would not be implemented in their states. However, KCR has maintained a questionable silence on the issue.”

Besides, Mohammad Ali Shabbir, a leader of the INC, alleged Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM,) of restricting people from protesting against the CAA.  He said, “At a time when people belonging to all religions, castes and classes are holding protests across the Country irrespective of their political affiliations, MIM leadership was trying to help the BJP Government by curbing protests in Hyderabad.”

The INC leaders even said the AIMIM leaders are trying to protest against the CAA like a “weekend show” at the Party headquarters, where only a few people participated.  He said none of the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs,) Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) and corporators participated in the aforementioned mobilised protest, which took place inside the Party headquarters.

Meanwhile, Mr. Owaisi denied all the allegations of the INC leaders and said, “I will die but not do any politics over dead bodies of protestors. Let them make allegation on me but I stand for peace and appeal all to don’t take law in their hands and hold a peaceful protest against CAA NRC.”

During the protest at the AIMIM headquarters in Hyderabad, Asaduddin Owaisi even requested KCR and Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) not to implement the CAA in the respective states.

Both the Telugu States, A.P., and Telangana, did not make a decision about the implementation of the CAA, which promises citizenship to refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh based on their religious beliefs.

The major issue of protest against the CAA is it allows refugees who are Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs, Parsis, Christians and Hindus, but excludes the Muslim refugees from these three countries.

The protests in major areas of Delhi, West Bengal, Assam and Uttar Pradesh are underway.
