On the 20th of December, after Friday prayers, Muslims staged a protest at a masjid on Quilla road, Nizamabad district, Telangana.

The protest was staged against the recently introduced Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA,] 2019.  The Act promises citizenship to refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh who are Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists.  The Act created a lot of chaos across the Country as it is said to violate the Constitution of India’s provision stating India is a secular country and discriminates on the basis of religion.

The people protesting at the masjid took out a rally with Indian flags and raised slogans against the Central Government for introducing the CAA.

One of the Muslim leaders said the CAA is against the Constitution of India and the Muslim community in India.  He said it only favours the Hindus and would give citizenship to only six communities’ refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Protests against the CAA turned violent in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh Muslim University (AMU,) the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) university in Delhi, West Bengal, Assam and Hyderabad.

The Telangana Police banned public gatherings in Nizamabad, Kamareddy and other areas and suspended internet services in the majority of areas to control the protests.  So far, the Police temporarily arrested more than 489 protestors in several parts of Hyderabad and Telangana.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS,) the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Muslim community organisations are against the Act, claiming it is dangerous to Muslims across India.

The protests are underway.
