Concerned about the rise in medicine  prices, the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPM) demanded the Centre not to allow all pharmaceutical companies to increase the prices of essential medicines by 10 %.

Notably, the Central Government allowed pharmaceutical companies to increase rates of medicines, from the 1st of April.  However, opposing the same, Mr. Tammineni Veerabhadram, the party secretary of the CM in Telangana, said, “the Centre had allowed pharmaceutical companies to increase the rates of 850 types of medicines.  This decision has burdened the poor and middle class families.”

Justifying their demand, the CPM leader said  that it is known that the Central Government’s decision was aimed at helping corporate companies, but it indirectly would burden the poor and middle class people, even for general medicines.

Notably, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Government approved a hike of 850 types of medicines, including paracetamol, BP and sugar from April.  Expressing his concerns, Mr. Veerabhadram asked the Centre that people were already suffering due to increase in the prices of various essential commodities, like petrol, diesel, domestic gas and electricity charges.

Meanwhile, the Central Government is yet to respond to the demands of the CPM.
