After the Central Government refused the proposal of a Turmeric Board, the turmeric farmers in Nizamabad, Telangana, staged a protest against the Nizamabad Member of Parliament (MP.)
The disappointed farmers put up a series of hoardings mocking Mr. Arvind Dharmapuri, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP’s) Nizamabad MP. The farmers blamed Mr. Arvind Dharmapuri, who failed to deliver on his election promise of establishing a Turmeric Board in the region.
The farmers put up hoardings across Nizamabad to remind the MP of his broken pledge and demanded a Turmeric Board for farmers of the district. The yellow coloured hoarding with Telugu text read, “Turmeric Board brought by our hon’ble Nizamabad MP.”
Notably, during the 2019 Parliament elections, the BJP candidate Mr. Arvind Dharmapuri along with Mr. Rajnath Singh, the Union Minister for Defence, asked for votes and had promised to establish a Turmeric Board for Nizamabad’s turmeric farmers. However, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel on the 29th of March, confirmed that there was no proposal approval to establish a spice specific board, including a Turmeric Board, in the country, therefore Telangana’s Nizamabad would also not get one such board.
Ms. Anupriya Patel said, “Spices Board, a statutory autonomous body, set up under the Spices Board Act, 1986 is entrusted with the responsibility of promoting 52 spices including turmeric, coriander, and chilies. Therefore, there is no proposal to establish a Turmeric Board or any other spice specific Board in the country.”
Meanwhile, former MP of Nizamabad Ms. K. Kavitha criticized Mr. Arvind Dharmapuri and the BJP, for not fulfilling the promises made during the 2019 elections.
