On the 27th of April, 15  patients cured of the Novel Coronavirus infection, came forward to donate blood for plasma therapy for COVID-19.

Recently, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) gave permission to Telangana’s designated COVID-19 treatment centre, Gandhi Hospital to conduct plasma therapy.

Plasma therapy is one of the cures for the treatment of patients infected with the Novel Coronavirus.  This therapy uses the antibodies produced in the body of a patient, by using the blood plasma of a cured COVID-19 patient.  The therapy results in boosting immunity of the patients and helping the body to fight off the virus.

Dr. Raja Rao, the professor of the General Medicine at Gandhi Hospital said, “In Gandhi Hospital, more than 15 cured citizens have come forward.  These people can be called any time to donate their plasma.”

In addition speaking about the terms of the plasma donation, Dr. Rao said, “The donor should be 18 years or above of age, but not too old.  The donor should have no comorbidities (additional illnesses co-occurring with a primary disease.)  Their status of immunity and the presence of antibodies will also be taken into consideration.  If all these parameters are fulfilled, then their plasma is ready for donation.”

On the other hand Professor Rakesh Mishra, the director of Hyderabad’s Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) explained the procedure of plasma therapy .  Mr. Mishra said only 200 ml of blood could be taken from a recovered COVID-19 patient.  Therefore, one recovered patient could transfer his plasma to one patient positive for the Coronavirus.

Whereas, one who is cured of COVID-19 without the help of antibodies during the COVID-19 treatment, are not eligible to donate their plasma.

After being permitted for plasma therapy, states like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Delhi also began the therapy to cure COVID-19 patients.

Telangana also started the therapy from the 28th of April, with the support of 15 cured patients who wished to be plasma donors.

Meanwhile, Telangana reported a total of 1,003 cases of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 and 25 casualties.
