In a bizarre incident, a panchayat office in Telangana stopped functioning after a skunk entered the room of the sarpanch.

In the Arnakonda village of Choppadandi Mandal in Karimnagar district, Telangana, a skunk entered the room Mr. Vidya Sagar Reddy, the Sarpanch of the village. Immediately after the skunk entered the office, Vidya Sagar left his office and so far has not entered it.  Due to this superstition that entry of a skunk is bad luck, many government officials in the Panchayat has stopped coming to office.  While some suggest the ill fate of the skunk, others cited health issues to avoid visiting the office and work.

In India, skunk symbolizes ill fate, bad luck, disgust and several other negativity and superstitions regarding pause in growth and development.  Therefore, after the skunk entered the Panchayat office, the Village Sarpanch Mr. Vidya Sagar Reddy decided not to work from his office, where the skunk was seen.

Due to belief and superstition, the work of the village panchayat is suffering terribly, as no official is paying attention and visiting the office to work.  In addition, to get rid of said ill fate due to skunk, many villagers suggested performing “tantrik pujas” (Black Magic or Superstitious Puja)  to remove the ill effect of the skunk entry.

Moreover, the villagers also blamed the Sarpanch and Panchayat for not organising the annual Alai Balai event, which usually holds on the eve of Vijayadasami.  They questioned the rationality behind putting an end to the age old tradition.

However, there is a section of villagers, mostly educated youths who have been dismissing such superstitions and asking the Sarpanch Mr. Vidya Sagar Reddy to visit his office and perform his duties.  They highlighted the delay in work and the village sarpanch missing from his office is indirectly affecting Arnakonda village and hindering the growth and development.
