In Telangana’s Hyderabad, the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers union affiliated to the Centre of India Trade Union (CITU) staged a 48 hour dharna, on the 16th of December, Friday.

The dharna for the next 2 days, till the 18th of November, was in the view of long pending demands of the ASHA workers.  They urged the K. Chandrashekar Rao led Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) now known as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Government to solve their problems.

It is to be noted, the ASHA workers accused the ruling Telangana Government of being stubborn and ignorant towards the problems including pending arrears and payments of ASHA workers.  Notably, previous leprosy surveys and Kanti Velugu dues have not been paid till now and for 16 months the workers have not even received the Wuhan Virus also known as the COVID-19 risk allowance arrears.

The workers also complained about n number of surveys conducted by them, which has not been paid for in the region of Hyderabad.  Apart from Medical department surveys, ASHA workers were conducting surveys of many departments like election duty and exams duty, but they were not paid a single rupee for their work.

With the 48 hours of dharna, the workers and union asked the Government to clear the dues of the ASHA workers and also fix a salary.

Mr. Edla Ramesh, the District Secretary of the CITU said that after the formation of Telangana, the KCR Government, which has promised to provide job security and health security, has ignored the problems of ASHA workers.  According to the current prices, the minimum wage of Rs. 26, 000 should be paid for each worker, which is not being paid.

The protest is expected to continue till the 18th of December.
