On the 26th of August, the Telangana High Court (HC) took a suo moto letter as Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding the Ramappa Temple. The PIL was taken after reading a news item published by The Times Of India.

It is to be noted, recently the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the historical Ramappa Temple as a World Heritage Site.

In regard to this, on the 26th of August, the HC reviewed the PIL and directed the Telangana Government to take the necessary steps for the development of the site around the temple. However, the Court directed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to ensure that the development works should be taken considering the environmental factors, not making the area a concrete jungle, but a tourist attraction.

During the hearing, the HC also directed the Telangana Government and the Central Government to file their status report to complete the conservation and management of the temple within the time frame given by UNESCO. The Court asked the Telangana Government and the Central Government to ensure they complete the remaining steps suggested by the World Heritage Committee to ensure the temple continues to be one of the world heritage sites. The deadline set by the World Heritage Committee, to complete the necessary steps is December 2022.

The court also asked the TRS to take all measures and protect the site from erection of new buildings and high rise structures. Since the years old temple in Mulugu received World Heritage recognition from the UNESCO, people would rush to buy lands around the site for construction and development. Therefore, the State Government should ensure the growth and development in the region should be eco friendly, considering the tourist attraction in the future.

Meanwhile, after the declaration of the UNESCO, the agricultural lands around the temples are now available at a cost of Rs. 45 lakh per acre, which was previously cost around Rs. 25 lakhs.

The property prices along the 6 km corridor near the temple between Palampet and Venkatapur doubled. A record number of land transactions have also been recorded recently. Considering all these facts, the HC cautioned the State Government to ensure the Ramappa Temple site should not be like the busy areas of Golconda Fort and Qutub Shahi Tombs in Hyderabad.

The court adjourned the matter to the 29th of September and asked the Telangana Government to submit a report regarding the same before the next hearing.
