Mr. A. Revanth Reddy, the President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee came down heavily on the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government and the Telangana Police.
On the 17th of June, Friday, the Telangana Police arrested Mr. A. Revanth Reddy, while he was on his way to visit the protesting students of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technology (RGUKT) also known as IIIT Basara. The arrest of Mr. A. Revanth Reddy came hours after Mr. Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Telangana was arrested for the same reason. Besides Mr. A. Revanth Reddy, the police also detained the Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) T. Jeevan Reddy, former Nirmal Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mr. A. Maheshwar Reddy and others in Narsapur.
After the arrest, Mr. A. Revanth Reddy lambasted the State government over excessive police deployment to suppress the students’ protest. He said, “Is it fair to manhandle a member of parliament? The State Government has deployed heavy police on the highway to prevent political leaders from entering the RGUKT campus. Why don’t the State Government use these police at pubs, railway stations and dark areas to prevent crimes like rapes in the State.”
Furthermore, Mr. A. Revanth Reddy warned Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, to resolve the issue of the RGUKT or IIIT Basara students, otherwise the TPCC would carry out a larger protest against the TRS Government.
Notably, the students of the RGUKT continued their protest against the college administration, on the fifth consecutive day, the 18th of June, Saturday. The RGUKT students also known as IIIT Basara students carried out a protest at the main gate of the IIIT Basara, against the poor quality food, water and lack of basic amenities in the premises. In total, the students put forward a list of 12 demands, including the appointment of a permanent vice-chancellor at the RGUKT, Telangana.
In addition, the students also urged Mr. K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana and Mr. K. T. Rama Rao, the Minister of Information Technology, visited the campus to look into their difficulties.
Meanwhile, to control the situation and maintain peace and order, the district police have undertaken extensive security arrangements, alerting police to prevent pupils from leaving the building.
