On the 23rd of September, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government announced Rs. 1,200 crores to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB.)
The K. Chandrashekar Rao Government allocated the money for improving drinking water supply to urban local bodies and gram panchayats of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. The HMWSSB would begin the construction of additional services like reservoirs, dams, arrangement of pipelines for providing free clean drinking water. It is to be noted, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) would ensure the works for 137 reservoir services and pipelines work for 2,100 kilometres.
The National Centre for Policing Excellence (NCPE) Consulting Engineers Private Limited prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and submitted the DPR proposals for providing water supply to extended areas of ORR villages by 2036. It is to be noted, the K. Chandrashekar Rao Government directed the HMWSSB to submit a detailed report of proposals for developing the required infrastructure to all such housing colonies which would get drinking water. The total cost of the DPR proposals was arrived at by the consultant at Rs 1,200 crore and Managing Director (MD,) HMWSSB had submitted the proposals to the government
As per the DPR components, to provide water connection to people, construction of storage reservoirs for 737 ML capacity, laying of inlets, outlets and distribution network for 2,108 km length pipelines are needed. The estimated cost of the detailed report construction was Rs. 1,200 crores, which the State Government released today.
The project would be completed under the jurisdiction of the HMWSSB and MA&UD. As of now, the HMWSSB has already implemented a water supply project for 190 villages situated beyond GHMC and within ORR limits with a cost of Rs. 756.56 crores. The authority constructed 164 reservoirs of 70 ML capacity, 1,600 km length of pipeline network and house service connections for drinking water.
According to the MD of the HMWSSB, the housing colonies situated beyond the Gramakantam extent of villages were not covered in this project. Now, with the additional Rs. 1,200 crores, the work would expand covering more regions, villages and urban areas.
The construction is a part of Mission Bhagiratha to provide free drinking water to the people of Telangana. During the 2018 Assembly elections, the TRS Government promised to provide free drinking water supply to the citizens of Telangana, by 2036.
