Indian Cricket Team Wears Their Mothers’ Name on Their Jerseys with Pride

As the crowd trickled into the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on the 29th of October, they were expecting a thrilling match. But all the eyes were instead on the 11 staunch backs that walked out into the field, proudly carrying their mothers’ names on their back

The Indian Cricket Team, led by the cool captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, inked in the names of their mothers on their jerseys for the 5th ODI that they played against New Zealand in Vishakapatnam. It was an initiative taken by the Star Plus ‘Nayi Soch’ campaign that strives towards breaking the barriers of society but taking our traditions with us. It was through a brainchild of this that the long overdue credit to our caring mothers, who don’t ask for it, was given. So out walked the men in blue bearing the names like Devaki (Dhoni), Sujata (Rahane), Saroj (Kohli), etc and showed the world that even the women in our lives are as important as the men.

And as the tears of joy and pride might trickled down the faces of their honourable mothers, we are sure that not only India, but the world must have seen the ‘Nayi Soch’, the new direction that we need to follow in this modern era. “We are quite used to having the surnames from the dad’s side. And, what’s important is to appreciate the stuff that mothers have done for us. It’s a very emotional connect and it’s good that it’s put on a public platform. I would like to request the whole of India to keep this in mind and appreciate them every day,” Dhoni said in an interview just before the crucial match which India won by a thunderous 190 runs against the Kiwis.

Goes without saying, yet needs to be emphasized, that Star Plus along with the concerned authorities deserve all the applause for bringing such viewpoint into a clearer picture. In the age where women are as seen as liability and men as assets, this was a slap in the face of many people for whom “women are of no use, bring no name to the family” is the stout belief. Hopefully such kind of amazing initiatives drive some meaning in the minds and our nation at least begins to move from a patriarchal society to that of an appreciating one. Ironically, it had started out as a women worshipping world, but somewhere down the lanes our evils overtook us.

Often over the regularities of life, we miss out on the people who make our life so ordinary. The helping hand that makes sure we are on time for school, the loving voice that make sure we have the courage to achieve our dreams, the silent support that makes sure we are always guided and protected. A mother maybe an ordinary being in many terms but she is what makes our life extraordinary.

India won the match and our hearts, let us see if we win this battle of against vindicating women.
