Amaravati: The Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) has responded to misinformation surrounding the potential flood threat to Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh’s capital city. According to CRDA officials, plans are already in place to ensure that the city remains flood-free. A report by Tata Consulting Engineers, a Netherlands-based organization, was shared after an in-depth study of the rainfall patterns over the past century.

The CRDA outlined its comprehensive flood management plan, which includes widening the rivers flowing through Amaravati, particularly the Kondaveeti and Palavagu rivers. Efforts will also focus on increasing the depth of these rivers to manage floodwaters more effectively. The technical committee has already approved the design for the plan, which is expected to cost around Rs. 2,062 crore.

Both the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have expressed satisfaction with the proposed flood management measures. However, CRDA officials noted that had these works been initiated between 2019 and 2023, the overall cost would have been lower. Emphasizing the need to rectify the delay in development, CRDA assured that corrective measures would be taken, with the city set to develop substantially within the next three years.
