The Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 2nd of April, released its manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

A manifesto is a published declaration of the promises, motives, initiatives and agendas of any political party, which is released prior to the Assembly elections and/or the Lok Sabha elections.

Rahul Gandhi, the President of the INC, accompanied by Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the All India Congress Committee (AICC,) and other top leaders of the INC, released the Party manifesto, titled ‘Hum Nibhayenge.’

Mr. Gandhi said, the manifesto reflects the voice of the citizens of India and deals with the wealth and welfare of the Nation.

Hum Nibhayenge promises 22 lakh government jobs to fight unemployment till 2020, the introduction of the Nyay scheme and the investment of 6 % of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in education.

Another promise included in the manifesto was the provision of health facilities to the poor. As per Hum Nibhayenge, the non repayment of farmers’ debts will be considered a civil offence, not a criminal offence.

Rahul Gandhi, after the release of the manifesto, took a dig at the Prime Minister Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said, “There are no lies in this manifesto as we have had enough lies in the past five years.”

Speaking about the manifesto’s basic agenda, Mr. Gandhi said, the Country is struggling from an economic emergency and needs shock therapy. He said, “That will happen when we give directly to the poor and increase their buying power.”

P. Chidambaram, a former Union Minister, said, “The manifesto focuses on unemployment, farmer’s distress and women’s security.”

Mr. Chidambaram headed the INC Committee which designed the manifesto for the Party.

Mr. Gandhi said, the manifesto was designed after taking the advice of the citizens of the Country through a consultation process.

After the release of the INC’s Hum Nibhayenge, it would be interesting to see what is included in the manifesto of the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
