The Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 cases in India are rising massively with a huge single day spike of 3.32 lakh cases. On the 23rd of April, India reported 2,32,730 new cases of the deadly infection, taking the total tally to 16.26 millions.

Yesterday, the 22nd of April, India had recorded as many as 3,14,835 new cases in a span of 24 hours, the first time that the country surpassed the three-lakh mark in its daily spike. The new cases were updated by the Union Home Ministry on the morning of the 23rd of April. In addition to the new positive cases, India reported 2,263 deaths and recoveries in the past 24 hours. It is to be noted, in the past 2 days, India added close to 7 lakh new cases and 5,000 deaths from COVID-19. With this, India is currently the second worst COVID-19 affected nation in the world. The first worst hit nation is the United States of America (U.S.A.)

The updated data of COVID-19 is available on the official website of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW.) As per the website, India has 16,263,695 positive cases, of which 24,28,616 are active cases, 1,86,920 are deceased cases and are recovered/discharged cases.

According to the Union Health Ministry, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan reported 75.01 % of the new COVID-19 cases. Maharashtra reported the highest daily new cases at 67,013. followed by Uttar Pradesh with 34,254 fresh infections, while Kerala reported 26,995 new cases. Adding to it, five states, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala in total account for 59.12 % of India’s total active COVID-19 cases

A total of 14.93 % are active cases of COVID-19, recovery rate dropped to 85 % and fatality rate increased to 2 %. The second wave of COVID-19 in India is said to be more dangerous and deadlier, compared to first one in 2020. The second wave is not only affecting people with the highest number of daily cases but also crushing the health infrastructure and burdening hospitals, medical staff, doctors and others with the lack of facilities.

States and union territories like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi and Kerala are reporting shortage of beds and oxygen for patients. In Maharashtra and Delhi, many COVID-19 patients are dying due to low oxygen supply. People are unable to get hospital beds for their COVID-19 inflected family members. In such circumstances, repeatedly increasing numbers of COVID- 19 infections and deaths leads to fear that the Central Government might impose another strict nationwide lockdown. However, the Central Government is not in favour of the lockdown and is trying to tackle the situation.

On the other hand, speaking about the total samples tested, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed 274,445,653 samples being tested till date including 1,740,550 samples tested on the 22nd of April.

In addition, nearly 13.53 crore people were given the doses of COVID-19 vaccine under the Nationwide Vaccination drive. Of the total, close to 30 lakh were administered the Coronavirus vaccination doses in the last 24 hours.
