On Thursday, two Malaysian teenagers were charged with murder for setting fire to an Islamic school. The fire was a tragic incident that claimed the life of 23 people mostly young boys.

On 14th September a fire broke out in Kuala Lumpur that sparked public outrage as innocent lives were lost due to bad safety measures.

The fire broke out on the third floor dormitory while all the boys were asleep. The children were unable to escape as all the windows were barred with metal grills.

The boys accused are part of a group of seven youths aged between 12 and 18. The police reported that these seven boys started the fire after a feud between them and the students from the boarding school.

The prosecutors refused to give the names and ages of the accused, in view of the Malaysian child protection law.

The prosecuting lawyer, Othman Abdullah reported, “They are being tried jointly and are facing 23 counts of murder, one for each victim of the fire.”

Malaysia’s law sentences murderers to death but authorities have reported that the law will not be valid as the accused are minors. The accused minors are likely to face jail time, fines, whipping and detention from approved schools.

The next hearing for the minors has been booked on 28th November.
