A horrific incident occurred on Thursday night on a local train in Haryana, when a Muslim teenager was stabbed to death. The incident also resulted in several people getting injured. The mob that attacked the teenager accused him of carrying beef in a bag.

A Muslim family of five were travelling back home after shopping for Eid in Delhi when an argument started about the seats in the train and triggered the attack.

The victim was identified as Hafiz Junaid and the police managed to arrest one person on Friday who confessed to the crime.

The police reported a group of 15 to 20 people got on a train headed to Mathura. The people got into an argument with the family that quickly turned communal to the extent the men called the Muslim family “anti national” and “beef eaters.” The attackers took the harassing to the next level by throwing their skull caps to the floor and grabbing their beards while taunting them.

Director general of police in Haryana, B.S. Sandhu said, “This was a clash between two groups which resulted in the death of one person. We have already arrested one of the accused. Police teams are investigating and others too will be arrested.”

One of the victims, Mohsin an 18 year old teenager reported the attackers were harassing him and his family in the view of the Government Railway police personnel at Haryana’s Ballabgarh railway station but the police turned a blind eye. Mohsin said, “To save ourselves, we called the police and the emergency response number but there was no response.”

The Station House Officer (SHO) of Government railway Police (GRP) at Ballabgarh police station, Surat Pal, was rather nonchalant about the incident and said, “One of them, Mohsin, called an ambulance when his brother was stabbed. Such things happen. Whenever there is a riot or fight, such things happen and people say some communal things, but we can’t do anything.”

Union Minister, M. Venkaiah Naidu said, “No one should take the law into their own hands. Even if there was a rumour, no one has the right to do this. The agencies should look into it and see who are behind this.”
