Vijay Shankar, a cricket player of the Indian Cricket Team, was ruled out of the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2019, after his toe injury.
Shankar is the second player who has been ruled out of the ICC World Cup. Recently, on the 19th of June, Shikhar Dhawan was also ruled out of the ICC series due to his thumb injury.
On the 1st of July, a senior official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said, “Vijay got hit on the toe by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery once again. His situation is not great and he won’t be able to take part in the tournament. He is going back home.”
Virat Kohli, the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team, on the 30th of June, informed about the toe injury of Shankar and said, “Vijay Shankar has a toe niggle, Rishabh Pant is in. He brings in a lot of fearlessness. Once he gets to 20, then he’s unstoppable.”
In spite of his injury, Vijay Shankar played well against Team England, on the ODI match between India and England which took place on the 30th of June.
Shankar got injured during a One Day International (ODI) match while delivery from Jasprit Bumrah.
Mayank Agarwal, a player of the Indian Cricket Team, is said to be Vijay Shankar’s replacement for further matches in the ICC series.
A source from the BCCI said, “The Indian team management is likely to ask for Mayank Agarwal as a replacement since he is an opener and also it might give KL Rahul a chance to get back to the No.4 position in case Rishabh Pant fails in the next two games.”
However, the ICC Technical Committee will take the final call and approve Mayank Agarwal as the replacement of Vijay Shankar.
Mayank Agarwal is a right handed opening batsman from Karnataka. He played his first international debut match against Australia in 2018. In 2018, Mayank was selected asPrithvi Shaw’s replacement in India’s Test series against Australia.
India is scheduled to play 2 ODI matches, on the 2nd of July and the 6th of July, against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively.
