Hyderabad: A tragic incident has unfolded in Kukatpally Yadava Basti, where a woman named Gurrampally Buchamma took her own life, reportedly due to fears of forced demolition by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA).
Buchamma, the mother of three daughters, was concerned that her daughters’ newly constructed homes might be razed as part of HUDA’s ongoing demolition drive to prevent encroachments on reservoir lands. Despite being assured that their houses were not in the danger zone, Buchamma became increasingly distressed and ultimately decided to end her life.
In response to the incident, HUDA Commissioner Ranganath clarified that the authority had not issued any notices to the affected families. He also emphasized that the houses in question were located far from the No Objection Certificate (NOC) zone and were not scheduled for demolition.
Ranganath urged the media to refrain from spreading misinformation about HUDA’s demolition activities. He stated that the ongoing demolitions were being conducted in accordance with government guidelines and were aimed at protecting public safety and preserving water bodies.
The incident has highlighted the growing anxiety among residents of Hyderabad over the threat of forced demolitions. While HUDA has assured that it is committed to protecting the interests of the poor and middle class, the tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of urban development.
