Tadepalli: Former MLA Hafeez Khan, representing the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), has strongly voiced the party’s opposition to the Wakf Amendment Bill, which they believe will negatively impact the Muslim community. Speaking to the media in Hyderabad on Saturday, Khan explained that a formal statement outlining their objections has been submitted by Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) member V. Vijayasai Reddy and himself to JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal.
Khan expressed concern over the bill’s provision granting district collectors authority over Wakf lands, a move that would undermine the role of the Wakf Tribunal. “This change would create immense challenges for the Muslim community, which is why we are firmly against the bill,” said Khan, emphasizing the party’s commitment to safeguarding the community’s interests.
The former MLA also pointed out that YSRCP President and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has made the party’s stance clear— they will strongly oppose the bill in all forums. Both Mithun Reddy in the Lok Sabha and Vijayasai Reddy in the Rajya Sabha have already voiced their objections, explaining the potential risks the bill poses to Wakf properties and the Muslim community’s rights.
Khan further criticized the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for what he called a “double game” regarding the Wakf Bill. He accused the TDP of supporting the bill in Parliament, only to create confusion at the JPC level. “If the TDP had truly opposed the bill in Parliament, it would never have reached the JPC. Their theatrics now only serve to betray the Muslim community once again,” he said, urging the community to recognize the TDP’s inconsistent stance on such crucial issues.
